“Fiery darts of the wicked”and “the shield of faith”

Ephesians 6:16

In this blog post, I want to share with you some insights on how to use our faith as a shield against the enemy’s attacks (Ephesians 6 :16). The apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesians that we should put on the whole armour of God, and he singled out one piece of equipment that is essential for our protection: the shield of faith. He said, “Above all, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked” (Eph 6:16). What does this mean and how can we apply it to our lives?

A fiery dart is a type of projectile weapon that consists of a burning material attached to a shaft or a stick. It was used in ancient and medieval warfare, especially for setting fire to enemy structures or ships. Fiery darts were usually thrown by hand or launched from a device such as a catapult or a crossbow.

We need to understand what the fiery darts of the wicked are. These are the lies, accusations, temptations, doubts, fears, and discouragements that Satan and his agents hurl at us to make us lose our confidence in God and His promises. They are designed to set us on fire with anger, bitterness, anxiety, or despair. They are aimed at our minds, hearts, and emotions, to make us question God’s love, power, and faithfulness.

We can protect us from this devils weapon by our faith in God and faith is not a physical object that we can hold in our hands, but a spiritual reality that we can activate in our souls. It is by knowing and trusting  in God and His Word. It is our confidence that He is with us, for us, and in us.
