Jonah
In this post, I want to talk about God’s sovereignty, especially God’s sovereignty over nature. I want to share some verses from the Book of Jonah that illustrate this topic. Jonah was called by God to go to Nineveh and preach repentance to the people there. But he disobeyed God and he sailed to Tarshish instead of Nineveh. But God did not abandon Jonah, he wanted Jonah to fulfil the mission he gave him. God did not make his journey to Nineveh easy, he sent a storm on the sea, and then the sailors threw him into the water because Jonah asked them to do so for the sake of their safety. Finally, he ended up in Nineveh and preached repentance there and God spared the city. As this story unfolds, we can see God’s sovereignty over nature in this book. Here are some verses that show this:
1). The LORD sent out a great wind on sea
But the Lord [a]sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up. (V 1: 4)
2). The LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah.
Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.(1:17)
3). The LORD spoke to the fish.
So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. (2:10)
4).and the LORD God prepared a plant
And the Lord God prepared a [a]plant and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be shade for his head to deliver him from his misery. So Jonah [b]was very grateful for the plant (4:6).
5). God prepared a worm.
But as morning dawned the next day God prepared a worm, and it so damaged the plant that it withered (4:7)
6). God prepared a vehement east wind
And it happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he grew faint. Then he wished death for himself, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
