“My mouth will not transgress”: A heartfelt decision

Psalm 17:3c: “I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.”

Taming the tongue was one of the key life decisions David made. In Psalm 17, he speaks not only of a tested heart, but of a deliberate commitment to speak no evil. He chose restraint, even in times of distress.
The tongue may be small, but its impact is immense. Scripture beautifully illustrates this through vivid metaphors:

🚴‍♂️ James 3:2-5

“ For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.  Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.  So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.”

💬 Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”

Our words have power—to build up or tear down, to bring healing or harm. Many lives have been lifted by kind words, while others have been broken by falsehoods, gossip, or careless speech. The tragedy is that such harm is often done thoughtlessly, without recognizing how deeply it affects all those involved.

The Bible offers clear guidance about the use of our tongues. David set an intentional guard over his speech, declaring: “I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.”
His example invites us to live with the same resolve—to speak with wisdom, compassion, and restraint, knowing that our words reveal the condition of our hearts.
