Jacob’s testimony:”God who has been my shepherd”

As Jacob approached the end of his life, he reflected on a journey marked by struggle, transformation, and unwavering divine faithfulness. In one of his final acts, he blessed Joseph’s sons — Ephraim and Manasseh — and spoke a profound truth:

“The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day.” Genesis 48:15

When we hear the phrase “God is my Shepherd,” our minds often go to David’s Psalm 23. But centuries before David penned those words, Jacob made this powerful declaration — a testimony forged through a lifetime of trials and grace.

God Protected Jacob- From fleeing his brother Esau to enduring hardship under Laban in Paddan Aram, he faced danger, deception, and loneliness. Yet God was with him — guiding and shielding him every step of the way.
Here is another verse on how God protected him while returning home:

“As they journeyed, a terror from God fell upon the cities that were around them, so that they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.” Genesis 35:5

God Provided for Jacob – Jacob didn’t just survive — he was blessed. God provided for his physical needs and spiritual growth. By the time he left Laban’s household, Jacob had become a wealthy man with flocks.

God Guided Jacob – Throughout his life, God appeared to Jacob in dreams and visions, offering direction and reassurance. From Bethel to Peniel, Jacob encountered the divine — and each encounter shaped his identity and destiny.

Jacob’s final words weren’t about his accomplishments or regrets. They were about God’s faithfulness:

“The God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day.”

What a legacy. What a testimony.

May we, too, live in such a way that at the end of our journey, we can look back and say with confidence: “God has been my shepherd — all my life long.”
