Human beings naturally long for appreciation and recognition from others. Yet the recognition we receive from people is limited, shaped by human understanding. In contrast, the most genuine and lasting recognition comes from God. His approval is perfect and real. Today, I want to reflect on one man who received such recognition from heaven. He was addressed by angels as “Highly Esteemed.” That man was Daniel.
Daniel is addressed as “highly esteemed” (or “greatly beloved”) three times in the book of Daniel:
1).Daniel 9:23 – As soon as you began to pray, a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed.
2).Daniel 10:11 – A heavenly messenger says, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you.”1)
3).Daniel 10:19 – The angel repeats, “Do not be afraid, you who are highly esteemed. Peace! Be strong now; be strong.”
This title is not just a compliment—it carries profound spiritual weight.I would like to share some thoughts on this.
The Root Word Behind “Highly Esteemed”The Hebrew word translated as “highly esteemed” or “greatly beloved” is ḥămudôt , derived from the root ḥāmad. This root means to desire, to delight in, to treasure. In other words, Daniel was not simply respected—he was precious and cherished in God’s sight. The angel’s words reveal heaven’s perspective: Daniel’s devotion made him someone God delighted in.
Interestingly, this same root appears in the Ten Commandments: “You shall not covet (ḥāmad)” (Exodus 20:17). While coveting reflects a wrongful desire, in Daniel’s case the word is used positively—he was “desired” or “treasured” by God because of his faithfulness.
Why Daniel Was Highly Esteemed, I think Daniel’s life explains why he received such recognition:
Unwavering faith: Even in exile, surrounded by Babylonian culture, Daniel refused to compromise his devotion to God. His courage in the lions’ den is a testament to his steadfastness.
A man of prayer: Daniel consistently sought God through prayer and fasting. In Daniel 9, he prayed not for personal gain but for the forgiveness of his people and blessing on his homeland.
Wisdom and integrity: His ability to interpret dreams and visions came from God, and he used this gift with honesty and humility, earning respect from kings while glorifying God.
The angel’s words remind us that true esteem is not measured by earthly titles but by how heaven views our character.
Daniel’s example shows that being “highly esteemed” is not about status, wealth, or influence. It is about living faithfully, humbly, and prayerfully before God.
The phrase also reminds us that heaven sees what the world often overlooks.Daniel’s life of faith, humility, and integrity made him beloved in heaven. His example challenges us to live in such a way that we, too, may be esteemed by God Himself—rather than by worldly measures.
