God selected David during a major crisis in Israel. God rejected Saul and chose David instead. He asked Samuel to go to the house of Jesse to anoint the new king. Samuel was already weeping over Saul and became even more scared to go to Jesse’s house because he feared Saul. Saul might kill him if he discovered the anointing of a new king. The people of Israel might have thought it was politically incorrect. Samuel was paralyzed with fear of Saul. Nevertheless, he went to Jesse’s house to anoint the new king. Here we see Samuel’s obedience to God. More than the present king and his might, Samuel obeyed God, and that obedience made a monumental change in the history of Israel. “Obedience is better than sacrifice.”
