“Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee”: Psalm 76 v10a

Penning my last post of this year. It’s from Psalm 76:10: “Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee.”

This psalm was penned by Asaph, one of the famous musicians in Israel. It was composed and sung after they won a victory over the Assyrian army and Sennacherib. This battle was significant for them since God fought the battle against the Assyrians.

When Sennacherib sent his messengers to threaten the people of Judea, they spoke against King Hezekiah. King Hezekiah encouraged the people of God to trust in Him and put their hope in Him. The messengers tried to discourage the people’s hope in God. In general, it showed the arrogance and pride of the Assyrians. They were cruel and tormented whoever they subdued.

After hearing the threats, King Hezekiah and Prophet Isaiah knew to pray. Prophet Isaiah received a message from God that Sennacherib would be too scared to attack the kingdom of Judah and would refrain from war.

That night, God sent His angel and killed 120,000 people in the Assyrian camp. King Sennacherib heard this news, returned home, and was later murdered by his sons.

God did not allow the Assyrians to overpower them; they did not have to go into captivity. The people began to thank God for this victory. King Sennacherib and the Assyrians were angry with the people of Judah, but it only helped the people of Judah, and they praised God.
