Reflections from Psalm 3: David’s faith in crisis

Psalm 3 was penned by David during one of the most agonizing chapters of his life—while fleeing from his own son, Absalom, who had rebelled against him. This wasn’t just political upheaval; it was deeply personal pain. To make matters worse, David’s trusted counsellor, Ahithophel, betrayed him and sided with Absalom.

Scripture offers a striking view of Ahithophel’s influence:

“Now in those days the counsel that Ahithophel gave was as if one consulted the word of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel esteemed, both by David and by Absalom.” —2 Samuel 16:23

David, now displaced and accompanied only by a few loyal followers, turned to his God as usual. In this psalm, written amidst his mental and emotional agony, David does not ask for revenge. Rather, his focus is on protection and deliverance. It helped him to move forward.

In verse 3, David declares:

“But You, LORD, are a shield around me, My glory, and the One who lifts my head.”

What a profound confession of faith:

“You are my shield around me”—God is his secure protector, the safest place of refuge.

“You are my glory” — David’s source of honor has always been God: during humble beginnings as a shepherd, in victory over Goliath, while reigning as king, and even now in betrayal.

“You lift my head” — In the depths of shame and sorrow, David looks to God for restoration and dignity.

Even in his darkest moments, David demonstrates an unwavering trust in God. This psalm is not just a plea; it’s a proclamation of divine faithfulness.
